Repeat Customers: The Cheapest Revenue You're Ignoring
Winning a new customer costs five times more than keeping one you already have. Yet most Kenyan SMEs spend everything on chasing strangers and nothing on the people who already paid.
Check your records — or your memory, if that's where records live. How many of last year's customers bought from you more than once? For most SMEs the honest answer is "few", not because customers were unhappy, but because nobody ever invited them back. That silence is the most expensive thing in your business.
The maths of repeat business
Acquiring a new customer means marketing spend, follow-ups, trust-building and price negotiation. A past customer already trusts you, already has your number, and already knows your quality — selling to them again is nearly free. Even a modest lift in repeat purchases flows almost entirely to profit, because the acquisition cost was already paid.
Why customers don't come back (it's not what you think)
Research on customer attrition is consistent: the single biggest reason customers drift away isn't price or a bad experience — it's perceived indifference. They simply forgot you, or assumed you forgot them. The business that stays warmly visible wins them by default.
A retention system you can run from your phone
- Capture every customer's name and number at the point of sale — no list, no retention
- Thank-you message within a day of every purchase (automate it)
- A useful check-in 30–60 days later: a tip, a reminder, a relevant offer — not just "buy again"
- Remember the calendar: service-due reminders, seasonal offers, a happy-birthday message
- Reward loyalty visibly — a discount on the fifth order, priority booking, a referral bonus
Turn buyers into recruiters
Your happiest repeat customers are also your cheapest sales force. Make referring easy and worth it: "Send a friend, you both get 10% off." In a market that runs on word of mouth and WhatsApp forwards, a simple referral offer outperforms most paid advertising — and it compounds.
New customers grow your reach. Repeat customers grow your profit. Build the machine that brings people back.
